I'm not sure the exact time that I began following Camila (@perolyke_cami) on instagram, but it has been a while. Her beautiful shots are full of colour and adventure and they make you feel like the sun is shinning on the back of your neck. She uses light and framing really effectively, and I always enjoy having a scroll through her feed. I asked Camila if she would be happy to talk to me about her Film Photography, here is her interview:

Camila was born and raised in Miami, Florida but now lives in Savannah, Georgia for school. She is currently in her Junior Year at Savanna College of Art and Design where she is a double major in Fashion Design and Film & Television.

When did you first discover film photography?

"My Dad shared his Minolta with me a bit when I was about 8 but it wasn't until I was 13 he decided to give me it because he saw how I had developed a love for photography and he taught me how to properly use it. After getting accustomed to the camera and getting a good dozen rolls developed I was excited to see the photos and intrigued about how the final product could differ with different cameras. After that my grandma gave me all of her film cameras. I started collecting old cameras because I was fascinated by the different looks and how they have changed through the years. One of my cousins has helped me collect the majority of my collection and I have been slowly building on it ever since. I have a brownie holiday flash, Polaroid one step, a Polaroid Super Shooter Land Camera, Pentax K 1000 Camera, Kodak instamatic 134 camera, Kodak pazzazz camera, Keystone 66-S, Konica C-35, Olympus- 35, Canon G-III, and Bell & Howell 8mm film camera and about 12 more. It wasn't until I was 17, and was at a pre-college in Philadelphia that I become fully enveloped in film. I took an experimental photography class and that's when I first learned how to develop my own photos."

Why do you like shooting on film?

"I love shooting film because for so many reasons. It has such a different aesthetic than digital and I really appreciate the look that I get from film. I love the anticipation of taking photos and having to wait for them to be developed before getting to see them. I love the process of developing my own film, making my own prints and all the control you have over your own images."

What camera/ film do you shoot on? Why?

"I have about 3 film cameras that are my go to cameras; my Canon ML AF35, my Minolta XG-1, and lastly my lomography colorsplash. I use my canon as my travel camera because it's a great camera that I've just grown accustomed to using throughout the years because it's the perfect grab and go camera. I have had my Minolta the longest and use that baby for special occasions and photo shoots. Then my lomo colorsplash I love to use at night because of its fun features, and the pictures always amaze me with its vibrant colors."

What is your biggest inspiration?

"My parents have always been by biggest inspiration because they have taught me so much and have supported me through thick and thin. They support my every ambition and every passion and they inspire me to work harder and keep striving to achieve."

What’s the best trick/advice you have learnt regarding film?

"There are many rules to photography and things you need to know to have more control over your own image but sometimes the best thing to do is to simply just let go and not be afraid to mess up. Don't be so caught up on the rules and just go for it, take a whole dozen rolls of photography and maybe only a couple come out great but at least you learned more by experimenting than by trying too hard to take perfect pictures."
