I text Jeni " Hey! Looking for a model this week, I'm working on a new Project. You free?"

Jeni wasn't free but she put me in contact with her friend.

- E N T E R : Elle Onyx -

* * *

I have a day job, and I moonlight (isn't that a magical word?) as a photographer. I like to set myself projects like i'm still at school so I took a week off of work to complete some photography projects. I decided that my portfolio of work wasn't diverse or challenging enough so I started a million projects (I'm prone to exaggeration, but I'm hoping you can catch my drift) to try to test myself in a variety of fields on photography.

At the top of my list of things that I need to work on was portrait photography or simply, things that talk back. I put some feelers out and begged friends and family until I was put in connection with Elle Onyx, an alternative model from California living in London. I got in touch and we met for a drink. 2 weeks later we were setting up studio lighting in my little West London flat and shooting a load of film.

This was my first real experience of taking photos of someone that wasn't just a friend or a family member. With my Olympus OM1 and a Minolta x700 I had stocked up on a load of different film. My little film box was jam rammed with Portra 160, ilford hp5 and fp4 and a whole stack of expired agfa 12ex rolls.

As Elle left, I breathed a sigh of relief. I had done it, I had had my first real photoshoot with a person and it had gone fairly well! Who would have thought? U N T I L .... I began putting my camera equipment away and noticed the film speed dial on my Olympus. My stomach dropped. how had I been so stupid? In all the excitement of taking photos I had made the complete school boy error of not checking and changing the film speed dial. I had shot all day on 400 with Portra 160 in and FP4. BUGGER.

I gingerly walked into my 'local' photography store with my rolls of film. I say 'local' because it's actually in Luton and I live in London so it's not in fact Local at all - but it used to be and I am a very loyal customer. (No they didn't pay me to say that!) I handed them over and explained the situation and they said they would see what they could do.

D - DAY: Picking up the Negatives and Prints.

My heart was in my stomach as it always is when picking up a large order of prints. When Jane handed over my photos I was so eager, I couldn't wait, I ripped them open and shuffled through them all one quick time. I then had another look and another, each more carefully and critically. S U C C E S S !!!

I was completely bowled over with how great the photos looked! Elle looked gorgeous, the lighting was on point and the composition was edgy and cool.

My first PhotoShoot and I killed it. You go girl!

Below are a few photos from the shoot that I am particulary fond of.
